About rushton
Rushton creates large-scale abstract paintings driven by instinct, music, and an unrestrained devotion to color. Working primarily in acrylics, his compositions unfold as immersive emotional landscapes charged with movement, depth, and a palpable sense of intensity that are conducive to personal interpretation by the observer. Every canvas is approached as a one-of-a-kind statement; a legacy piece never to be repeated, where gesture and pigment collide in moments of raw expression.
A true Renaissance man, Rushton brings a multidisciplinary background in film and theater acting, theater direction, and movie production to his visual practice. This cinematic sensibility informs the emotional pacing and compositional depth of his work, allowing each painting to unfold with presence and intention. His commitment to originality began early; he sold his first works at age ten at the Boardwalk International Art Show in Virginia Beach, marking the start of a lifelong dedication to creative independence.
Rushton’s artistic lineage draws from Pollock’s physicality, Picasso’s fearless reinvention of form, and Monet’s sensitivity to light and atmosphere. These influences – combined with impressions gathered through extensive global travel – shape a visual language rooted in movement, texture, and emotional resonance. Recent time in Greece and Italy has further informed his palette and spatial rhythm, infusing the work with luminous color and layered history.
Music serves as the unseen architecture of each painting and extends beyond the studio into performance. Every work is inspired by specific musical compositions spanning genres, eras, and movements that guide gesture, layering, and tempo. The result is a visual symphony – an immersive experience that rewards prolonged engagement and personal interpretation. Rushton actively expresses his musical passion as a member of two performance groups: Rushton Motel-The Doors Concert Experience and Stranger Strings. This ongoing engagement with live music deepens the rhythmic and emotional foundation of his work.
While Rushton’s work has been featured in exhibits and private collections across the country, his favorite way to work is through collaboration. He is especially recognized for commissioned pieces created in close creative partnership with clients, engaging deeply with clients’ favorite musical selections, color preferences, and emotional intent. Through shared discussions, each commission becomes a dialogue – translated into art.
Through color, movement, and music, Rushton creates not what is seen, but what is felt.
